《要点をつく》
要求は単調直入にしよう。日本語はその反対だ。生徒は「暖房をいれてほしい」とき「先生、寒いんですが」と要望を相手に想像させる。上の場合、給仕は客が望むサービスを推測しなければならない。
上の例はわが国の著名な英会話の先生の著書からの模範解答だが、残念ながら和式英語だ。さらに先生は続ける「実は、これだけ言えば、普通新しいフォークと取り替えてくれる。ダメ押しの表現は、次の言い方です。Another fork, please.」
これは逆だ。英語では要件を述べ、次に必要あらば理由を加える。またAnother fork, please.はぶっきらぼうでそっけない（curt）感がある。

質問は、明らかに「健康」と「お金」を比較対照している。一方、解答（B）は「お金」が行方不明だ。比較の概念を守てば「なんでも」というあいまいな言葉は「金で買えるもの」になる。このように、会話や討論を進めるには、論旨を一環させる（consistent)ことが大切だ。
